What it’s like to live in county’s poshest spot

WE ASKED STANTON-ON-THE-WOLDS RESIDENTS, DOES IT DESERVE ITS NEWLY-BESTOWED TITLE?

LIFE just got even better for the residents of Stanton-on-the-wolds, newly named the poshest place to live in Nottinghamshire.

The Telegraph has revealed the 48 poshest places in Britain and the village has made it on to the list, knocking down Colston Bassett, which had been the poshest Nottinghamshire village in 2022 and 2023.

Stanton-on-the-wolds, near Keyworth, is surrounded by picturesque countryside, and The Telegraph writes that its posh appeal is enhanced by it being home to Stanton-on-the-wolds Golf Club, seen as one of the best in the UK.

At the heart of the village is the 11th-century, Grade Ii-listed All Saints Church, while the local primary school is rated ‘good’ by Ofsted.

But is life in Stanton-on-thewolds really the idyll the Telegraph suggests? We asked some villagers.

Dennis Jones, 76, said: “We’ve lived here for 10 years. You see these surveys and every year there are about 25 best places to live in Britain, so you have to take it with a pinch of salt.

“We lived in Bridgford before here in a large house and wanted to move somewhere smaller out in the countryside.

“It’s just a lovely place to live, it has nice people and good links into Nottingham.”

A 48-year-old resident who did not wish to be named said: “We’ve been here for several years now, we just liked the village and were looking to move.

“It’s a lovely place. There’s a good community feel in Stanton, but it’s like any other small village.”

Mike Winson, 78, who worked as an optician in Keyworth for more than 40 years, said it was surprising to find Stanton had been named the poshest place in the county.

He said: “It’s nice to have the golf

course so nearby, it’s over 100 years old. I usually go two times a week, weather depending.

“We have only been here about three-and-a-half years.”

A woman in her 90s, who did not wish to be named, was also surprised to learn of the findings. She said: “I’ve lived here 30 years, there are nice little walks and I have the dog so I do a lot of walking.

“It’s very surprising as I don’t think it is now with all these houses, I’m more of a rural girl. I think it’s changed a lot over the years.”

“There used to be a good sense of community but it’s all falling apart since Covid and everyone who used to live in Stanton lived here their whole life, and now the houses are being sold. It is nice and all the people are all friendly, but it has changed a lot.

“All of these houses here are being rebuilt, it’s no longer a country lane. I call it an urban highway.”
