RISING costs and health considerations have caused a beauty salon owner to shut up shop after more than a decade in business.

Lucy Shaw opened Effortless Beauty in Beeston in 2010, after working as a therapist and manager in various other salons in the town, as well as Nottingham and West Bridgford.

But the 41-year-old yesterday shut the business for good after 14 years of trading, 12 of them based at the Caritas Clinic in Beeston.

In an emotional post to her customers, Lucy wrote: “The time has come for me to hang up my beauty uniform which I have worn since 2001, when I first qualified as a beauty therapist.

“Every year my costings go up and these are due to go up again, and unfortunately it is no longer viable to carry on with the ever-increasing costs.

“I am also needing to consider my health as over the years my body is finding it harder to perform my treatment to my best ability, and for those that don’t know I am currently suffering with tennis elbow and tendonitis in my wrist/thumb, which is very painful.

“This has been a huge and very difficult decision and one that I have been considering with much thought and constant changing of my mind since the start of this year.”

Due to the heartbreak of closing her salon, Lucy has decided to leave the behind the beauty industry, in which she has spent the past 23 years, and move into a new role in the customer service industry. Lucy, the sole member of staff at the salon, added: “Without my customers I wouldn’t have had a business, so I’m very grateful to my clients. Some have been with me from the day I started and gone from salon to salon with me. “It’s more than going to work and helping a person, I’ve seen their life over the last decade and they have seen mine.”

Lucy values the time she has spent with clients. She added: “To anyone that has been a client in the past and to my long-standing clients that have visited for many years I thank you for all your support and loyalty. “We have shared so much laughter, excitement, enjoyment, sadness, frustration and precious memories over the past years and I’m so very touched that each and everyone of you has chosen myself as your beauty therapist and Effortless Beauty as your beauty salon.” The space Lucy has been renting in the Caritas Clinic will be available later this month. She describes it as the ideal place for someone offering counselling, beauty services or therapy treatments.
