Trail of chaos spread over entire county
THE strong winds wreaked havoc across Nottingham and the wider county yesterday.
Powerful gusts blew down several trees, with drivers facing delays and buses forced to divert.
A tree blocked the railway near Langley Mill, disrupting rains on East Midlands Railway’s Liverpool/ Nottingham/norwich route.
Another fallen tree blocked Sunninghill Drive, in Clifton, with Nottingham City Transport bus routes being diverted via Farnborough Road and Southchurch Drive.
The A606 Melton Road in West Bridgford was closed in both directions from Boundary Road to Mowbray Gardens due to a large fallen tree, delaying Trentbarton buses by up to 20 minutes.
An allotment holder in Clifton faced a clean-up after a tree crashed down on his shed.
Allotment trustee Dominic Mcgoldrick said: “It’s lucky that nobody was hurt. The owner of the plot just asked me to see if I could cut the tree back to see if I can get access to his shed – or the debris if you can call it a shed.
“It’s the norm for down here. There was one came down last year and came through a shed. That was the last big one that came down though.
“I’ll cut off all the small stuff and then log the rest and use it to heat the greenhouses and stuff.
“We don’t know who looks after those trees any more. It’s part of the Spinney.
“He (the plot owner) has lost a few plants. He will have to sort out his greenhouse himself. There’s no insurance because we’re just allotments. At least nobody was injured. That’s the main thing.”
A huge tree came down in Lowdham and another is reported to have come down on the village’s cricket ground.
A tree crashed on to Regent Street in Nottingham, near Nottingham Playhouse. A police cordon was in place around the damaged tree.
Paul Johnson lives on Dovedale Road. His chimney has fallen on to his garage. He said: “I heard it fall. Now I’ve come to look at this tree because it’s quite spectacular. The wind was horrendous. Absolutely horrendous. It was only for about ten minutes though but it did a lot of damage. The chimney has destroyed the garage. I’m fine though. There’s nothing you can do about it. It is what it is.”
