Final home clash for the Magpies as U’s eye safety

- By SAM ALLEN

STUART Maynard wants Notts County to finish on a high as they prepare for their final home game of the League Two season.

Today’s visitors Colchester United are looking for the points that will ensure they stay above the relegation zone.

Magpies head coach Maynard is confident he can steer the team higher up the table next season and wants to build momentum with today’s game (3pm).

“When you play for Notts, you have to have that pride in wearing the shirt and representing the club, and the players have shown that since I’ve been at the club,” said Maynard.

“It doesn’t matter what the current situation is when you cross that white line, you’ve got to give everything.

“We have come up short with a lot of the results but we’re giving everything for the football club until the end of the season, and we’re starting to see the rewards with some performances and the little things we’ve tried to add tactically.

“Every game we go into we have to go in with the belief of winning. I believe we have enough in the camp to do that already.

“When we’re going into these games with the other team still having something to play for, they’re a good test for us to gauge where we’re at.

“We still want to focus on the remaining games and make sure we finish on a high because we can take that into our preparations for next season.”

Colchester can secure survival today with a win or if second-frombottom Sutton United lose.

Experienced manager Danny Cowley took over at Colchester at the turn of the year and has managed to keep the U’s above the bottom two. Now he wants to see them sprint to the finish line.

Cowley told local media: “Notts County have a really clear identity and a clear way of playing.

“They have some excellent players offensively. They had an excellent start to the season and a wonderful rhythm, off the back of getting promoted last year.

“There’s a lot to respect and we know that it’s going to be a really tough game for us.

“But we’re a strong team now, a tough team and I think we showed that in the way we played against a really direct Grimsby team.

“We think we’re at our fittest, we think we’re at our strongest and we’re ready for the challenges that this final week will bring.”
