House cordoned off and area searched by forensics teams

MYSTERY OVER LARGE-SCALE POLICE INVESTIGATION IN CUL-DE-SAC NEAR CITY CENTRE

A CUL de sac on the outskirts of Nottingham city centre was the focus of a large scale police investigation at the weekend.

It is understood police were in Wellington Square, off Derby Road, in Radford from Friday afternoon.

Nearby Wellington Villas, which is in front of the terraced properties that sit at the back of Wellington Square, was also cordoned off.

Police and forensic investigators left Wellington Villas at around 7.50pm, but remained at Wellington Square for some time. There are several terraced houses on either side of the road which were placed within the cordon and a long row of terraced properties at the end of the street, which sits in a predominantly student area. Forensics officers appeared to be focusing on one house and an alleyway. The house had police tape outside it. Officers were spotted sweeping an alleyway in the area and searching gardens and bins in the street.

Tom Hill, a student who lives in Wellington Villas, described a “wave” of people in hazmat suits descending on the street. “There must have been about 10,” he said. “They were searching all down the street, on driveways, in bins and down everyone’s gardens. It can’t just be a small crime. Police said someone jumped over the fence [from the direction of Wellington Square] and ran down the road. This street is usually pretty normal.”

Carl Reid said he had just got home from a food shop when he saw the police had arrived on his street. Carl said: “My dog was going crazy, she was yapping at the door, and that’s when I knew something wasn’t right. I thought, ‘What’s kicked off?’ The Aldi worker said forensics officers then searched his front garden.

Nottinghamshire Police have not released any information about the incident.
