A NOTTINGHAMSHIRE town is said to have been “devastated” by the discovery of a body in the search for 19-year-old Jacob Crompton.

Jacob was first reported missing on March 24 after having been on a night out, with Nottinghamshire Police confirming that a body was found in the River Idle, north of Jacob’s hometown of Retford, on April 27.

Police said at the time that formal identification was yet to take place, but Jacob’s family were informed.

A fundraiser has now been established to help the family with the costs of a funeral, as well as to raise money for the various volunteer search and rescue teams that helped to find Jacob.

The Gofundme has been established by friends of the family and a statement on the page says: “Over the last six weeks, the support and kindness from the Retford community and beyond, for the family of Jacob Crompton has been overwhelming.

“In recent days, our little town has been devastated by the heartbreaking news that Jacob’s body has tragically been found in the river.

“Jacob had so many plans for his future, and he was working so hard to realise these dreams.

Jacob was a kindhearted, loving, cheeky chappie who was so very loved by his family, friends and colleagues, and the void left by Jacob’s passing is vast.

“There are no words that can adequately express the pain and anguish that is felt by Jacob’s Mum, Dad, siblings and extended family.

“No parent should have to suffer the grief of losing a child, it’s every parent’s worst nightmare, and financially, no parent plans to pay for their child’s funeral.”

Detective Chief Inspector Gemma Scott, of Nottinghamshire Police, previously said: “Jacob’s family have been informed of this very sad development and our thoughts are with them at what I know will be an extremely difficult time.

“I would like to thank all those members of the public for sharing our appeal, and for the support and assistance they have given to our officers on the ground.

“Although our searches have concluded, officers are continuing to work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Jacob’s disappearance.

A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

More than 100 people have already donated to the fundraiser, with £2,238 raised of the initial £5,000 goal at the time this edition went to press.
