A HISTORIC building in Newark that dates back to the 15th Century has been placed on the market, either to be rented or sold.

The White Hart Inn is a Grade II listed Tudor period property, featuring an ornate frontage on Newark Market Place, and black with black and white beamed construction at the back of the building.

There is an annual rent of £15,000 if the building is let, but the freehold interest in this property is available alternatively for sale. Offers are being asked for in excess of £125,000.

The former coaching inn is an example of late 15th century Tudor timberframed architecture in England and is surrounded by later, predominately Georgian buildings.

It was used for retail purposes from the 19th Century, and until the 1960s it was home to Bainbridge’s ladies fashion.

It fell into disrepair following the closure of the store, but was restored in the 1980s in a project overseen by Guy St John Taylor. Mr Taylor was instrumental in the restoration of the building in liaison with the Conservation Officer and to ensure it is preserved for the future.

It is now being marketed by Richard Watkinson and Partners, and the premises is suitable for Class E Use including retail, a cafe or offices.

The ground floor space is around 830sq ft with double display windows.

There is around 2,360sq ft of space across former offices on the first and second floors.

The offices can be accessed from the archway and Olde White Hart Yard, whereas the ground floor premises can be accessed off Market Place.

Inside the building is a superb Purlin roof of circa 1500, as well as some remains of a crown post roof circa 1350.

The timber-framed wall has been been rebuilt in brick, but the building still has a highly decorated and admired front which has 24 closely packed uprights with tiny terracotta figures of saints.

In recent years the offices were occupied by a firm of chartered accountants, whilst the ground floor was occupied by the Nottingham Building Society for many years.

The building is now being offered to let as a whole or as two separate units.
