Magpies looking to hit ground running in bid to improve squad

NOTTS WORKING THROUGH THEIR LISTS AS THEY PREPARE FOR NEXT SEASON

- By SAM ALLEN

GETTING the recruitment right is a big priority this summer for Notts County as they look to strengthen their bid for promotion from League Two next season.

The recruitment structure at the club allows for a collaborative effort between head coach Stuart Maynard and the board in signing new players, with the work starting from the moment they appointed their new man in the dugout.

It is clear where the team needs improvement looking at this season’s performance and where the squad is thin following the confirmation of the retained list for next year.

Maynard is excited to have certain names returning from long-term injuries in the summer, while the club work to get the bulk of their business done as early as possible.

“We’ve been active on that side of things since Stuart (Maynard) came to the club,” said director Richard Montague.

“We want to hit the ground running and do some business nice and early.

“We won’t always get our first choices but we have lists and we’re going to work through those lists to try and get the best players for the best value to make sure that we get promoted next year, which is absolutely what the ambition is.”

Maynard added: “We’ve had a lot of injuries this season which is a frustration for everyone when you know you have players out that could make a positive impact.

“Recruitment is something that we’ve been working hard on to make we have a competitive squad that can keep the strength of the starting team high when we rotate players.

“We’re really excited about some of the players we’re looking to bring into the football club now.”

Keeping hold of their top talent will be just as important as who the Magpies bring in over the coming months as they prepare for the next campaign.

Part of the latest board statement said: “Speculation about several of our high-performing, contracted players is inevitable.

“Nevertheless, our position is the same as ever – we do not need, nor intend, to sell any of them and would only consider offers that represented exceptional value for the club.

“As they depart for their summer break, we’d like to reiterate our gratitude to the squad for their efforts in 2023-24.

“For Stuart Maynard and his staff, the hard work doesn’t stop as we continue our collective effort to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion next season.

“Excellent progress has already been made and we look forward to updating supporters on new signings, as well as the club’s many exciting off-field projects, in the weeks and months ahead.”
