Chippy forced to close after profits battered

-

THE owner of a fish and chip shop has announced its closure - after nearly two years of trying to find a buyer.

Starfish Traditional Fish and Chips in Hicking Lane, Stapleford, was put up for sale in 2022 for £119,995.

The end was announced in a short message on the Stapleford Community Group Facebook page.

It said: “To all our amazing customers and great community. It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of our shop after seven years. We would like to thank everyone for your support over the years. We will certainly miss you all.”

Owner Costa Daniels spoke to the Post in 2022, saying how upset he felt about having to place the chippy on the market.

He said the shop had been hit by rising energy prices and increasing costs in all aspects of the business.

He said: “We are a takeaway which makes good money and we are in a good location in the local area but our costs have just gone up too much,” he said.

“Our margins have just been completely battered. It’s the overall costs of running things as well including my stock. Everything I use including fish, oil, paper and curry sauce has all doubled but I haven’t doubled my prices.”

Customer and Stapleford councillor Richard Macrae said the chippy had been a cornerstone of the neighbourhood.

He said: “Starfish Chip Shop has been more than just a place to savour crispy fish and golden chips. It has been a gathering spot, a hub of warmth and camaraderie, where friends and families shared laughter and stories over delicious meals.”

Councillor Macrae, the leader of Broxtowe Independent Group, said Mr Daniels had supported community initiatives.

“The closure leaves a void in the community, as it was not just a place to eat, but a symbol of togetherness and support.

“Costa Daniels always stood firm his commitment to supporting local initiatives, notably championing causes like Broxtowe Youth Homelessness and Stapleford Community Group.

“His dedication to making a positive impact on the community has left an indelible mark on Stapleford and beyond.

“The community extends its deepest gratitude to Costa Daniels for his years of service, generosity, and friendship and wish him all the best for the future endeavours.”

One customer gutted about the closure said: “Oh no! You were the only decent chip shop left in Stapleford.

“I’m so sorry you’re leaving but best of luck for your future.”

Another posted: “So sorry to read this, you put the ‘star’ into fish and chips. Good luck to you in your future endeavours.”
