Holly and Dec’s jungle chemistry

Debuting on I'm A Celeb we ask Judi James to reveal all about presenters Holly and Dec

Holly Willoughby had big shoes to fill when she took up the role of replacing Ant Mcpartlin on I’m A Celeb. But as soon as she made her debut alongside Declan Donnelly last week, reviews from viewers were largely divided, so we’ve asked body language expert Judi James to reveal whether these two really have on-screen chemistry…

comfort gesture

Holly’s natural smile might be broad, but her eyes dart to the side and her brow puckers into a frown. Dec is super-splayed here. His arms are folded in a comfort gesture and he’s sporting a wide grin.

The pair are really gelling here, with some mirrored body language suggesting a more like-minded approach and a sense of relaxation into their roles. Holly is using more intense eye-listening signals now, closely studying Dec’s face – as he is hers.

wary look

Dec is relaxed and splayed, facing Holly using some open and emphatic hand gesticulation to help her feel at ease. Her overall posture looks self-diminished, while her expression is wary and her hands perform a picking gesture of anxiety on the table in front.

cemented roles

The chemistry and their roles are cementing now. Holly is smiling with a look of concern. Dec is now free to be the funny guy, miming concern with a hand part-covering his face, but a naughty smile clearly visible.

Judi’s verdict: perfect pairing

It was a tall order for Holly to pair up with Dec. Literally. It took a short while for the icebreaking banter about his 5ft 1in status to pop up in the scripts. Until that point, it was touch and go with the chemistry. They did seem to be putting a double act together in front of our eyes, but once the jokes started to work and Holly found her niche, it all came together naturally – with Dec emerging as ‘the funny man’ in his own right.
