QUICK GLANCE
1990 Citroën BX GTI 4x4
Bonhams MPH, Bicester Heritage, UK 22 May, bonhams.com
We spotted this very car at the Bicester Heritage Sunday Scramble a few years back, and it stood out among the older, more exotic machinery as a genuine rarity. Tidy BXs of any flavour are unusual today, but the 4x4 GTI was an unusual sight even when it was new. Difficult to look after due to a number of unique parts, survivors in the UK are probably in single figures today. It’s estimated to sell for £4000-8000.
1933 Audi Front ‘Prototype’ by Gläser
Historics, Ascot, Berkshire, UK
15 May, historics.co.uk
Not a huge amount is known about this pre-war prototype, but it’s thought to be a one-off built by coachbuilder Gläser using Audi Front UW running gear, possibly making it the earliest six-cylinder, front-wheeldrive car built. Discovered broken down into parts by a Russian citizen in Kaliningrad, presumably during World War Two, it was sold to Armenia where it was later restored. It’s estimated at £350,000-380,000.
1935 Lagonda M45 Rapide
H&H Classics, IWM Duxford, UK
26 May, handh.co.uk
Consigned from the estate of the late logistics entrepreneur Keith Boardall, this Lagonda M45 is one of only 53 Rapides built. With a claimed 101mph top speed, this car features coachwork by Freestone & Webb and lived in Canada until it was re-imported in 1989. It was used in the Lagonda Club’s 2000-mile Alpine Tour, before a quieter two decades in Boardall’s ownership. Estimated at £140,000-160,000.
1960 Chevrolet Corvette LM
RM Sotheby’s, Amelia Island, USA
22 May, rmsothebys.com
One of three Corvettes run by privateer Briggs Cunningham in the 1960 Le Mans 24 Hours, this project is a seriously interesting piece of endurance racing history. The team achieved a class victory via car number 3, fulfilling Cunningham’s dream of succeeding with American cars and drivers, but sadly this car retired on lap 32. Thought lost until rediscovered in 2012, it’s in need of total restoration. Estimate is $900,000-1.3m.
