KYM MARSH’S OK! COLUMN
I’ve been busy filming a new show so I’m working most weekends at the moment. I can’t say too much as it’s still under wraps but it’s about people who’ve been duped into losing huge sums of money by people they’ve met online.
It’s something I can relate to as a few years ago a man was conned into thinking he was talking to me and he sent me flowers. He’d been catfished and I do wonder what the person who was conning him into thinking they were me was saying to him. It’s been eye opening and hard going at times but I’ve been enjoying it.
I’m glad that Coronation Street is going to explore coercive control in relationships
in an upcoming storyline featuring Geoff Metcalfe [Ian Bartholomew] and Yasmeen
Nazir [Shelley King, below left]. Domestic abuse takes many different forms and it’s not always physical, it’s mental too, so it’s an important subject to shine a light on as it happens too often. You do sometimes meet someone who wants to wear the trousers in a relationship and they dress it up and try and disguise it in different ways. I can think of one relationship I was in where there was an attempt to control me. It was a case of we’d only go out with his friends and never see mine, and if he didn’t want to go out then we wouldn’t go out. It’s subtle, but it is controlling. I was aware of it and ultimately left the relationship. You sometimes don’t realise the extent of it until afterwards.
Congratulations to my former Corrie co-star Ryan Thomas and Lucy Mecklenburgh who got engaged recently [above and right]. They’re such a lovely couple and I have no doubt Lucy will look absolutely stunning in her wedding dress!
