HOTSPOT NO 38 THE PARK
WHAT IS IT?
In the heart of the Cotswolds, home to the famous Ladies’ College and racecourse, Cheltenham is often referred to as Britain’s most complete Regency town. No 38 The Park is a boutique hotel in the middle of the spa town, housed in an elegant townhouse on one of the many pretty squares, a stone’s throw from the racecourse.
WHY DO WE LOVE IT?
The 14 beautifully decorated, cosy bedrooms each have huge beds, perfect for sinking into, and they also feature deep, roll-top baths with both Acqua di Parma and Bramley bath products, making it the perfect spot for a romantic weekend away. If you can bear to leave your room, the townhouse is within walking distance of the bars, restaurants, shops and theatre of the bustling high street. A bit further afield, you can walk in the beautiful Cotswolds countryside. The staff go out of their way to make your stay extra special. Plus, a visit to No 38 is a serious gastronomic getaway, with the awardwinning restaurant Prithvi serving up delicious cuisine. The Indian-accented eatery is a light, intimate space with a skylight and doors leading out on to the pretty walled garden. OK! kicked off with a bellini before diving into the queen scallops with mackerel ceviche, cauliflower and kale crisps to start (£14), followed by halibut, brown shrimps, coconut and samphire pakora (£25) served with masala potatoes (£6). For dessert, we had the deliciously refreshing spiced mango with coriander salsa and mango sorbet (£9). After that, we even managed to squeeze in a selection of cheeses from the extensive cheese board! A coffee in the secluded garden ended the night perfectly.
WHO GOES?
Celebrity fans of No 38 The Park include actors Idris Elba and Luke Evans and Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley.
WHAT ELSE?
At No 38, there’s a comfy living room downstairs with an open fire and large sofas, plus dogs are allowed to stay at the hotel. Also within walking distance is the Grade I-listed Pittville Pump Room, found in the beautiful and sprawling Pittville Park, a magnificent example of Regency architecture. The Pump Room houses the spa waters that really helped to put Cheltenham on the map in the 18th Century, and occasionally, throughout the year, you’re allowed to venture inside to have a taste.
