WE HAVE TO SAVE OUR THEATRES
Lockdown measures have been drastically reduced and some people have criticised Boris Johnson for doing it too soon, saying we’re risking a second wave. Personally, I think he’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. We do have to get this country back up and running, but I know it’s scary for everyone.
As an actress, I worry about the theatre. They can reopen from 4 July, but not for live performances. Theatre bosses have warned the industry will collapse if severe restrictions are kept in place after lockdown.
Judi Dench, who is 85, has said she fears theatres won’t reopen in her lifetime. That would be devastating. I have friends who work in theatre, but they now have no job and no income. The theatre offers so much joy and happiness to people. We have to save them and the incredible people who work for them.
