robbie savage, mark hughes and ashley williams talk all things wales
What do Wales need to do at this tournament? Robbie: We need our best players at the top of their game if we’ve got any chance of replicating 2016 when we made it to the semifinals. There was a togetherness in the team in 2016 that was almost like an extra man.
Ashley: It was such a good summer – like being away with your mates. We’d grown up together and that transferred on to the pitch.
How vital was that first match against Switzerland? Mark: The first game in any tournament is massive. Momentum is vital, so a positive result can set you up for the whole tournament. Once we’re there we’ll make an impression. We’ve got a lot of experience with good young players, too. I’m excited by what’s ahead of us.
Who should we watch out for? Robbie: Gareth Bale. He’s world-class. Ashley: He’ll give it everything he’s got. He’s the man now. He’s the captain, the one with the experience, so I expect to see him perform.
How far can Wales go? Ashley: No one’s saying we need to get to the semifinals or win it. It’s a difficult group, so getting past that stage would be an achievement. Robbie: I agree. If we can get to the quarter finals it’ll be very good.
