Do you ever get days when you feel overemotional or you can’t sleep? Or times when everything just seems to fall into place? The ever-changing cycles of the moon may be to blame. Indeed, just as Leann Rimes sang in her hit from the 2000 film Coyote Ugly, sometimes you just can’t fight the moonlight.

Right now, for instance, we are “waxing” and heading for a “buck moon” – the first full moon of July – on the 24th.

“The new moon affects everyone, whether it’s our sleep patterns, emotions or mind state,” explains ‘moon mentor’ Kirsty Gallagher (right), author of the best-selling book Lunar Living.

“In ancient times, the moon was the marker of the passage of time and our ancestors looked to her for insights and wisdom, using her phases for gathering, sharing and ritual.”

According to Kirsty, fast-paced modern life is distancing people from this concept. Here, she reveals how you can work with the phases, cycles, and energies of the moon to your advantage, and by doing so, better understand yourself to transform your life.

1 The dark moon – time to recharge

“The last few days of the waning moon are known as the dark moon. While this is a time of endings – of completing the moon’s cycle – it’s also about preparing for the next one, and it’s a deeply healing time. You may find yourself exhausted, emotional and craving solitude. Give yourself permission to withdraw. If you ignore the signals to slow down, you might feel disconnected. Think what areas of your life need your attention. This is not the time for ‘doing’. Tune into your intuition instead.”

2 The new moon – dream Big

“The new moon marks the beginning of a brand new lunar cycle. The darkness from the previous phase lifts and things become clearer. Life feels full of possibilities. Now’s the time to visualise your goals – and how to get there – as you have the most clarity. It’s still not a ‘doing’ phase, more a time for making plans. Intuition and self-awareness are still heightened, so be focused on what you want and need.”

3 The waxing crescent – Be productive

“The silver crescent of the moon in the sky marks your ‘get things done’ time. As energy levels grow, now’s the chance to make your new moon goals come true. A tricky moon phase at times, it can be tempting to give up, so be aware of any excuses and inner doubts now. Remind yourself of your new moon intentions – and stay true to yourself.”

4 Waxing First quarter moon – CHANNEL YOUR ENERGY

“A quarter of the way through the lunar cycle, the moon brings the inspiration you need to realise your hopes – it’s like the energy of the universe is on your side. Say ‘yes’ more and be receptive to what’s coming your way. If you find the voice of doubt creeps in, it’s for a reason – to check how much you really want your new moon vision.”

5 Waxing gibbous moon – EMBRACE THE FRENZY

“This phase holds all the potential and power of your hopes and dreams. There can be impatience – a frantic need to get things done. Many people find they don’t sleep well in the nights before the full moon, so use this energy, stay up late and finish that project. It’s the last big lunar push of energy to get things done. If things feel difficult, it could be you are trying to open a door that isn’t yours to open.”

6 Full moon – DO NOT PROCRASTINATE

“The next full moon, on 24 July, is the Aquarius full moon. She will be full in the sky, having aligned with the sun on opposite sides of the Earth. This is peak energy time, but with the moon drawing our feelings to the surface, you should expect to be emotional. This is a wonderful time to evaluate your life. Notice where you let self-doubt or fear hold you back. You will be able to see things clearly. If you feel frustration – often at lost opportunities – be clear on exactly what’s needed to move forward.”

7 Waning gibbous moon – PLAN MEETINGS

“As the moon gets smaller and darker, you may feel a slight dip in your get-up-and-go. Tempted to give up? Don’t! This is where you finally begin to understand all that has stood in your way and why, and release what has held you back. It’s a time of great insight and communication. Have those difficult conversations now, get your message out there into the world. Be seen and heard.”

8 Waning last quarter – LET GO

“The moon wanes to make room for new beginnings – let go of the old. At this crossroads, look back on your journey thus far and forward to where you’re heading. Things may finally be coming together. This is a pivotal moment. Take responsibility, face up to things and, if necessary, let go of certain goals for good or find a new approach to implement on the next cycle.”
