This week: Lynne Tests a new gadget promising a salon-smooth blowdry at home

-

Anyone else plagued by a scruffy halo of baby hairs and snapped-off strands? These pesky sprouters are easily tamed by a salon blowdry, but it’s almost impossible to angle your hairdryer to get the same result on yourself.

To fix the issue, Dyson has unveiled a “game-changing” innovation which promises a smooth-salon blowdry finish at home without requiring any skill or extreme heat. You will, though, need a bit of cash. The Flyaway Head has just been added as standard to Dyson’s (brilliant) Supersonic hairdryer which will set you back a cool £299. Although, if you’ve got one already, you can buy the attachment for £30.

This piece of curly plastic won’t win any beauty contests – it made my sleek Supersonic look like it had grown an ugly trunk – but it makes up for it in smarty-pants points. It delivers two simultaneous airflows: one to blast flyaways down and out of sight, and one to lift and smooth longer strands over the top.

It’s used on dry hair as a finishing step, and it didn’t take me long to get the knack of gliding it. In a couple of minutes, it made my scruffy air-dried hair look impressively sleek and silky. It worked a treat even at a low temperature, so I’d go along with Dyson’s claim that it’s less damaging than daily ironing.

Sadly, the Flyaway Tool doesn’t combine its rootpolishing act with any kind of volume, and I’d say it’s best suited to straight-ish hair like mine. However, if you were thinking of shelling out for the Supersonic anyway, this might well swing it. I’m certainly blown away by it…
