Unwind at this deluxe resort on the edge of a city that’s steeped in history

Why go?

This award-winning hotel, restaurant and spa, now owned by the National Trust and close to York Racecourse, prides itself in offering “traditional excellence”. Built in 1699, the William III country house was once the abode of famous diarist Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and is aptly mentioned in the writings of her fictional counterpart, Bridgerton’s Lady Whistledown.

OK! sipped our complimentary chilled champagne as we checked out our suite featuring pastel soft furnishings, floral wallpaper and a four-poster bed. Kicking back in our robes, we felt utterly relaxed soaking up the views across the lush 20 acres of grounds, which boast manicured lawns, a willow-lined lake and a pretty walled garden. Guests with dogs are welcome in one of three Garden and Cottage suites.

What to eat

Afternoon tea is a must! During our visit, delicate sandwiches and intricate sweet bites were served with a vast selection of teas in the traditional lounge. If weather permits, you can take tea on the terrace. Later, in the panelled dining room, we tucked into a three-course meal worthy of a Michelin-star rating due to its presentation and service.

To start, pan-fried scallops were paired with a delicious clam chowder, topped with smoked potato, while our chosen main dish, Asian-style beef with rice noodles, was sublime. But the showstopper was dessert – a gravity-defying rhubarb mousse that melted in the mouth. Being in Yorkshire, breakfasts were of course hearty, ranging from a full-on fry up and buttery kippers to smoked salmon

and scrambled eggs.

Pampering Packages

We went in search of a pick-meup at the compact but relaxing health and fitness spa located in an extended pair of Edwardian cottages across the road from the main hotel. Featuring a Jacuzzi tub, sauna and steam room, there’s also a pool overlooking a picturesque garden. Heavenly treatments are offered in the cosy candlelight rooms upstairs.

We were utterly soothed by a 50-minute Aromatherapy Associates massage, but were also tempted by the revitalising facials, pedicures and manicures. There’s even a specific men’s treatment menu for your plus-one. And if you’re feeling peckish, pop into the Club room for a bite.

What else is there to do?

Famed for its rich medieval history, York is ideal for culture vultures who want to stretch their legs, cruise on the River Ouse, or eat their way around this beautiful city. With its circuit of 13th-century walls, magnificent Minster and tangle of narrow cobblestone streets with names like Whip-ma-whop-magate, it exudes mystery and charm.

Immerse yourself in York’s ancient invasion at the Jorvik Viking Centre (where you can literally smell the history) and learn about the journey of our trains at the National Railway Museum. For breathtaking views, climb the 275 steps to the top of York Minster tower. And if you still have the energy, take the circular walk around the Roman walls that once protected the city.
