Old Bike Mart

Lost, then found, and reproduced here…

While many of the features that you see within this publication have relied on images taken from the expansive (and ever-increasing) Mortons Archive (www. mortonsarchive.com), we are more than aware that there are innumerable fantastic images stashed away in cupboards and cardboard boxes in lofts and attics throughout the land.

When they do get found, more often than not it’s with little or no knowledge of the people and machinery that are shown, but there is one good way of maybe finding out some more information, and this is a procedure that has proved successful throughout the years that Old Bike Mart has been in print.

Having clocked up an impressive number of miles during his circulatory trip of the UK on his Vincent last year, John Newsome has been in touch recently with an amazing collection of images from more than 70 years ago.

John was sent the pictures by a longtime friend of his, Channon Willis, who has owned and ridden a Triumph Daytona since the late ’70s. The last of her elders, her uncle, recently passed away and while she is able to uncover some of the history behind a picture or two, she was wondering if any of the Old Bike Mart subscriber network might have a bit more information…

There’s one image of Channon’s uncle Gordon with his wife, Nancy, and his Sunbeam S8 (below), while many of the other images are of Gordon’s friend, AO Roger, including one of him with his KTT Velocette which he rode in the 1947 IoM Junior TT. Here we include the pictures of AO Roger’s racing exploits, alongside some other riders, while next month we’ll be showing some further images of other racers and, as usual, if anyone can shed any further light on any of these photos, please get in touch…
