ANGLIAN CYCLE & ENGINEERING CO
Perhaps it was obvious that a suitable title for a company manufacturing motorcycles in Suffolk should be Anglian, but there were actually two operating in the beginning years of the 20th century under very similar names.
Stannard & Co, mechanical engineers since 1888, started the
Anglian Cycle & Engineering Co, which was based in Tavern Street and Station Road, in Stowmarket.
Very little history is known of this firm, although it produced a model in 1903 using a Clement engine with automatic intake valve and a rear brake on the belt drive rim. An example was restored and ridden by the late Don French. The Anglian Cycle & Engineering Co appears to have been short-lived, although Stannards still exists as an electrical retail firm, still with premises in Tavern Street. Regretfully, we have so far been unable to trace a picture of one of the Anglian Cycle & Engineering Co’s motorcycles.
