Tribulations of the Travers

I was interested in a picture of a Travers James in a recent OBM and noticed the registration is HJR, a Northumberland registration. I have a James with a GJR plate which was June 1954, so I guess the age of 1957 of that bike is incorrect.

I rode in the Travers in the early 1960s. The start was from St John’s Chapel, following a fence over the moors. Many bogs made this impossible and, together with mist and the sound of engines from left, right and centre, it was very difficult to know which way to go. I called it a day! I believe Sammy Miller was excluded for taking a short cut!
