Three of the best – then and now

You say that you love the ‘Then and now’ photos, so here’s mine. This photo was taken in August 1972, with Alistair Yule on the BSA Thunderbol­t, Kevin Tidy on the MZ and me on the 1969 Triumph Daytona.

Alistair had only just bought his bike new, one of the last BSA Thunderbol­ts. On the seven-mile ride home from Dave Bryant’s at Lightwater, one front mudguard stay broke and the cylinder was leaking from the base gasket. So back it went for warranty, not good. For the first two years the Triumph Daytona that I’m on was owned by Triumph Motorcycle­s. I think it was a test bike and it really went well – faster and better than Alistair’s BSA Thunderbol­t.
