Nigel Rollason – on wheels and on sea!
Having just received the June edition of Old Bike Mart, I have to say that it was up to its excellent high standard. The article concerning the A-Z of British Motorcycles was especially interesting, particularly the part concerning Barton Motorcycles.
I was pleased to see that you selected a photograph of Nigel Rollason, who did indeed come fourth on his Barton Phoenix in the 1983 Sidecar TT. However, it should have been noted that he went on to win the 1986 Sidecar TT on the same machine passengered by Donny Williams. Nigel had previously won the 1971 Manx GP on a Yamaha. This made Nigel only the second person to win races around the IoM Mountain Circuit on two and three wheels, the first being the late Freddy Dixon. In his retirement Nigel took up sailing and, while visiting the TT, took part in a ‘Round the Island’ yacht race which he won, surely making him unique.
