Scrambling in East Anglia

-

I was so pleased to see the pictures of the three 1963/64 Eastern Centre Scrambles programmes (Feedback, OBM430) which brought back many happy memories for me.

In 1957, in the RAF and having just returned from the H bomb tests at Christmas Island, I rejoined the Bury St Edmunds Club and bought a used square barrel 250 Greeves from Dave Bickers’ Ipswich shop to complement my trials Greeves.

Posted to RAF Watton and living in Mildenhall, I rode most of the Eastern Scrambles and Trials from 1957 to 1965. I would be delighted to see if my name appeared in the programme. I well remember the Cadders Hill course, having once been painfully rammed from behind in the first lap melee on the hill. I can’t say I recognise the BSA but it reminds me of a picture of Geoff Ward. Happy days!

In 1965 I was posted to Germany on the Dutch border. The Greeves were sold and replaced by two Bultacos which I bought directly from the Spanish factory, the fourspeed Sherpa costing £132 and the five-speed Pursang £152.

I managed to continue to ride until overtaken by decrepitude about eight years ago. Now at 84, I am happily still involved in trials, having been invited to be president of The Dabbers, our popular Cambridge area classic and twin shock trials club. Pleased to see that Unearthed and Feedback are continuing. Keep it up.

?? ?? We had a rootle around in the OBM shed and found this programme which does indeed list Mr Clears, although, sadly, not in the same heat as our editor’s father who was competing in the same meet!
