Improved Charlie’s filter

-

Over at The Classic Bike Shop, Mike Boulton has made a number of improvements to the concept of the Charlie’s filter, making it simpler with no loose parts to lose. The advantage of the Charlie’s filter over a standard part is that it uses a finer strainer, better protecting your engine from any fine particles that result from wear. When changing the filter simply unscrew the cap and lift the old filter out and drop the new one in and replace the cap, screwing it down gently. There is no need to tighten it – the cap just needs to be in place with no slack.

The filter element is a BSA 14-4589 part which Mike Boulton can supply. This unit is designed to fit the Triumph T140 and companion models. When fitted to 750cc models it is fully reversible, and while it can also be fitted to the 650cc oil-in-frame models, fitment will then require the oil feed pipe to be removed and the exit site plugged. This is not reversible and so could be a cause of concern to originality buffs.
