A cry for help from Oliver’s Mount

-

As you may have heard, in June a number of serious structural building issues were discovered in the paddock at Oliver’s Mount. Due to both the health and safety and insurance implications, this has meant that the rest of the season’s event have had to be cancelled, pending the removal or repair of the defective infrastructure. The operators of the site are working with the landlord, Scarborough Borough Council, to try and rectify matters, but the issues have turned out to be worse than initially thought. The paddock is at the bottom of a steep hill which has led to building foundations being undermined by years of heavy rainwater. The council is currently engaged on a feasibility study and is suggesting that, in addition to some of the paddock buildings requiring imminent demolition, there will also be a shortterm need for asbestos removal, surface water drainage systems, retaining walls and some large-scale electrical improvements. Some new structures are also required, including a storage barn, shower block and portable buildings.

This, of course, all takes money and so Phil and Caroline from Shop4bikers have set up a crowdfunding account at https:// uk.gofundme.com/f/help-keepracing-at-olivers-mount. Until the operators are confident that the site can be improved, no tickets will be sold for next year’s event, which is an added blow after the last 16 months. As England’s only natural road race circuit, Oliver’s Mount has been hosting motorcycle races since 1946. It would be good to think it can continue for another 75 years.
