The day Hitler came to King's Lynn

-

Once again memories of a less PC world came flooding back while reading of Malcolm Mowbray’s exploits in a soft top Isetta.

North Anglian Autos shop in King’s Lynn was a hive of mischievous pranks in the 1960s and the arch prankster was my fellow mechanic, Mick Seth, who is sadly no longer with us.

Mick had no time for any bubble car and hated working on them. On one occasion he had just finished servicing an Isetta which had a soft top like Malcolm’s. Before going out on a road test, Mick asked me if I would go with him and drive while he tried to find a rattle. This turned out to be a ploy which allowed him an opportunity to perform to the good folk of Lynn.

After setting off with the hood rolled back, he produced a hastily made false black narrow moustache and an eye patch. With his hair wetted and plastered down, he stood up as I drove around the town giving extended arm salutes while screaming “Sieg Heil” at the top of his voice.

Today this would no doubt result in the pair of us being arrested but in those times it was well received by all.

Happy, happy days which, at times, included our being useful as well as highly amusing!
