A 60-year-old mystery solved
I always enjoy the letters as the memories keep coming. I was especially interested in the September letter from Jim Hewson. My first job in 1959 was as a Postal and Telegraph Officer (counter clerk) at Spring Street Post Office in Paddington, London W2, which had an area attached where the Telegram boys gathered. I always remember them as cheeky but not impolite, and not adverse to taking the odd liberty when the opportunity arose. We always knew the bikes had been governed to stop the little perishers charging about and that they were finding ways to ‘deal’ with it, but until I read Jim’s letter I never knew how! Thank you, Jim.
