The World’s Fastest Indian… model!

I have for many years subscribed to and enjoyed

Old Bike Mart. Today I write to you regarding something quite unusual. Over the last 12 to 18 months, my next-door neighbour has spent countless hours in his garage making his Burt Munro-inspired model. The finish is fantastic, even more so when 90% of the material came from the scrapyard. The maker is Martin Neal and this is his own description of the build.

“I have been out of the bike scene for about 15 years and was flicking through YouTube in the early hours one night in lockdown when I came across videos by Allen Millyard and was blown away by the bikes he had built in his home workshop.

“It reminded me of the Burt Munro film, The World’s Fastest Indian, working away in his shed and I persuaded my wife to watch the movie with me.

The film fired me up to want to build a bike again but when I looked in my pockets the next day, all I had was £20.

“So we took a trip to the local charity barn and I spent my £20 on a child’s mountain bike. I posted it on my Facebook page stating that I was going to turn this into Munro’s fastest Indian. I imagine that people must have thought I’d gone into lockdown madness, but, in my mind’s eye, I could see the finished bike standing there.

“The bike took about a year to build from scrap metal parts
