More E10 experiences

-

I read with interest the letters from both Bob Jenkins and Tim Burgess in January’s OBM regarding problems with E10 petrol.

With regards to Bob and his BSA Bantam, I can’t believe that that amount of rust came out of that tank – it would have resulted in large holes in the tank. May I suggest that it’s not actually rust but a decomposed sealer that had been applied to the tank, the ethanol having dissolved it?

With regards to Tim and his chainsaws, like him I have chainsaws, a Stihl and a Dolmar, which run perfectly okay on E10, but, being only occasionally used, I drain off the petroil mixture when not in use. No need to buy expensive Aspin or other expensive ethanol-free petrol.

I have also used E5 and now E10 petroil at 25:1 in my 250cc Greeves and have no issues and the bike still continues to run on E10 okay, fuel pipe is PVC, and carb has metal float so is not affected by ethanol. I keep the tank topped up to avoid condensation and clean out the carb once a year of any sediment. John Wakefield, Cambridge
