The day the dog died…
May I make my small contribution to the memories of W Guiver of Sutton?
I had showrooms two or three miles from Guivers – Hartfall of Mitcham. I sold second-hand cars, motorcycles and scooters. For a couple of hundred pounds I could sell you a MkII Consul or a half-tidy Triumph 3TA. An elderly Lambretta LD150 would be around £20.
I used to visit Guivers quite regularly for Triumph spares and a chat with Vernon Havers. One day I found the shop closed with a notice in the window that read ‘Closed due to a family bereavement’. I later found out that Vernon’s dog had died. Yes, he was a very kind person and an animal lover.
He was related to Nigel Havers, the well-known actor – I think they were cousins. Vernon and Guivers have long gone but are not forgotten. John Stevenson Tadworth, Surrey
