I think Peter must be mistaking me for someone else (‘Calling Tony Gutteridge’, Letters, OBM431) as I have lived my entire life in the North Kent rather than the Surrey area. I was heavily involved in the Kent branch of the Norton Owners Club many years ago and I am at present the membership secretary of the Norman Motorcycle and Cycle Club, so he may have seen the name associated with these. I’ve also had a couple of articles published in your sister magazine
Real Classic, which may have jogged a memory.
In reply to Larry Heslop, regarding ‘Engineers’, I was being a little cynical when I asked ‘What is an engineer’.
Like Larry I was an indentured tradesman (electrical fitter) apprenticed at one of Her Majesty’s excellent naval establishments, sadly no longer with us. Then, via technical college, I became a design draughtsman and a member of an electrical institution being given the title of ‘Incorporated Engineer’ and ending up as a project engineer within the electrical supply industry.
In relation to the owning and rebuilding of bikes, I would never use the words ‘engineer owned and maintained’ as although I have played about with bikes for most of my life I do not consider myself skilled enough to give myself this title. Tony Gutteridge
