Old Bike Mart

Another example of the fake owners' club phone scam

- Brian, Plymouth

I have a couple of copies backed up and so have only just read your editorial about scamming [OBM443].

I advertised my T100C Triumph in OBM earlier in the year and also got a phone call from a bloke claiming to represent the ‘Triumph Owners' Club Newsletter’. It all sounded plausible and he tried to put a bit of time pressure in by saying that the edition was going to the printer the next day...

However, I said: “Of course I won't be ordering via an unknown cold caller,” and was just about to suggest he sent me the details so I could look at the newsletter when he hung up.

Even then I thought the line may have been lost and gave him the benefit of the doubt. I thought about contacting Triumph Owners' Motor Cycle Club but was not sure and never got around to it.

Keep up the good work exposing these parasites. Greatly enjoy the paper and love the old stories and photos.

We have yet to find an owners’ club that will ‘cold call’ you to advertise your bike for sale, so if you get a call from someone purporting to be from a club, be extremely wary and contact the club direct. Ed.
