Ambassador at large

- Michael Easton

It was a lovely Reader’s Tale and photos from Dave Broadbent describing the travels of his Uncle Don aboard his Ambassador (OBM445).

From the photos, I can tell you that CJX 738 is most probably a 1951 Ambassador Supreme, although the same model was practically the same for 1952 before changes were made in 1953. Fitted with the 197cc Villiers 6E engine, the legshields were probably a period accessory and certainly not factory fitted. The Cable Motor Co Ltd of Lister Lane, Halifax was listed by Ambassador as one of its approved agents for 1951.

Sadly, no records survive of CJX 738 on either the DVLA database or the Ambassador Machine Register, but I can tell you that the register presently records the details of just one known surviving 1951 Supreme, but 11 surviving 1952 Supremes. Model photos attached for reference/interest. VMCC & BTSC Ambassador marque specialist. Co-author of A Guide to Ambassador Motor Cycles. Keeper and compiler of the Ambassador Machine Register.
