Happy days at Kay’s shop

- Richard Hyatt

Ah, what wonderful memories of Kay’s of Ealing. Thank you for stirring the grey matter – I was at school in Ealing mid-late 1950s and our Saturday gym sessions were carried out in the YMCA gym next door to the Kay’s shop frontage. Therefore every Saturday morning was spent initially in the gym and then, once outside, we would see all the Saturday bike activity.

Thence, when I left school in the early 60s and was fiddling with my machines, Kay’s was a go-to place for clothing and parts – yes the guy downstairs was a font of knowledge certainly but, thinking about it, he was in his little subterranean world all day long!

Bond Street itself led up to Ealing Broadway from the South Ealing road; my memories are of an artist shop and a wonderful ex-WD radio shop full of components I bought to make crystal sets, but mainly just down the road was the Ealing Studios of film fame.

As a GPO apprentice, I spent many months in the GPO telephone exchange next door to these studios.

Thanks for stirring memories – firmly etched in my mind, but don’t ask me what I did yesterday!
