These boots were made for keeping…

- Gerry Allen

Regarding your request in Feedback last month about anyone else who has a pair of Mike Hailwood boots – I still have mine!

I bought them in 1966 or ’67 from H&L Motors in Cheltenham and I used them up until a few years ago when one of the zips broke. I couldn’t find anyone who could replace the zip, so ‘parked’ them until I could and bought some new boots. I’m now on my third pair of new boots…

The quality of the MH boots was excellent (especially compared with modern boots, in my experience) and the steel insert was very welcome when something kicked back – you hardly noticed it! They served me well for more than 50 years and, although a bit scuffed, still look good (better than the owner anyway!). I never knew who made the boots, but they knew how to make something that lasted. Best £10 10s 6d I ever spent!
