Renold Classic motorcycle chain
You will obviously all be familiar with a motorcycle chain and for many of you the first name to spring to mind will be Renold. In fact, the bush roller chain was the first design patented by the Hans Renold company in 1880. The very first motorcycles used leather drive belts but these lacked durability, so Phelon & Moore in the UK and the Hendee Manufacturing Company (soon, of course, to become Indian) in the USA decided that a stronger and more efficient form of power transmission was needed. The two firms approached Hans Renold, and thus the motorcycle chain industry was born.
Renold stopped making motorcycle chains in the 1980s in order to concentrate on the industrial side of its business (it’s still a worldwide manufacturer of industrial roller, conveyor and inverted tooth chain along with gearboxes and transmission couplings).
But now that famous name has returned with an updated ‘Classic’ version of the Renold Brand (non-O ring) chain which has been certified to ISO10190 for motorcycle use and is now available in improved packaging.
These are the first new Renold chains designed especially for classic motorcycles since the Renold GP chain in 1975.
Initially, the most popular 520 and 530 rear drive and a selection of primary drive chains for older bikes (including 114038, 116038 and 110046 for those who know their Renold part numbers) will be available, all of which have been designed in the UK and are manufactured in the company’s centre of excellence for roller chain manufacture in Einbeck, Germany.
