Could 2019 see more Filipino restau­rants open­ing in the UK? Af­ter the suc­cess of Kini­law and Buko in Hox­ton (where dishes in­clude salted duck egg, heir­loom tomato, mus­tard leaf and grated cured yolk; and hand-dived scal­lop, cu­cum­ber, radish, lime and fer­mented roe), the Filipino fast-food chain Jol­libee opened in Earl’s Court, serv­ing dishes such as the sig­na­ture fried chicken with its side of spaghetti and tomato sauce topped with hot­dog slices and ground beef. De­scribed as a cross be­tween McDon­ald’s and KFC, Jol­libee has 1,300 branches world­wide and the chain plans to open a fur­ther 25 stores in the UK over the next five years.
