CELEBRATE Skelmersdale was such a success, organisers are now hoping it will become an annual event to recognise the town’s achievements.

Organisations from across Skem gathered at the Evermoor Hub to show people the wide variety of activities on their doorsteps – and they had a fantastic response from the community. Hundreds of people attended and many signed up for the workshops taking place throughout the week, which will culminate in the Celebrate Skelmersdale Music event this Friday at the E-Rooms at 7pm.

Along with demonstrations from Attitudes Dance Company, the Korean Martial Arts Academy and the Community Choir amongst others, the Men-Aces enjoyed the fair weather outside playing exhibition games throughout the day.

Miriam Eaton, Men-Aces coach said: “Looking on was a group of refugees from East Africa. They were eager for a game, so we invited them to play. Their smiles said it all, they wish to start playing football.”

Following a fantastic match, the Men-Aces are now looking for kit donations to provide further football activities.

The organising committee received support from local businesses – donations from SCA, Farmfoods, Proctor and Gamble and Hotter Comfort Shoes provided prizes for raffles, along with other materials and a huge amount of financial support was received from local councillors.

Cllr Claire Cooper, chair of Celebrate Skelmersdale, said, “When we initially thought about Celebrate Skelmersdale we thought we would have enough activities to fill an afternoon. We hope to organise more events this year to celebrate our town.”
