We showed guts to earn a point
SKELMERSDALE United got their second point of the season as Tommy Lawson’s side drew 1-1 with Matlock Town on Tuesday evening.
After picking up a draw with the same scoreline against Grantham Town on the opening weekend of the season, Lawson was more than happy to come away with a point again.
The manager said it was a ‘gutsy’ performance from his players.
“It was a gutsy performance and a good point because we had a man sent off when we were winning 1-0,” said Lawson.
“It affected us because they went at us but we settled ourselves again and got our shape back and did well in the end.
“It was quite encouraging and if we can get the long distance games out of the way before January it’s good too,” he added.
Lawson was particularly pleased with his side’s determination and organisation and the Skelmersdale United boss admitted these were things all sides want to see after working hard throughout the pre-season campaign.
“In the early season, formations and organisation of the players are something you hope to see,” said Lawson.
“The players are constantly learning about other players’ strengths and weaknesses and there’s a lot going on which you work on at the start of the season.
“There are a lot of changes and it’s important you’ve got team building going on. There were a few positives from last night and that’s great as we’re starting to gel even more.
“We dug in really well and the sending off made it even more difficult but we got a point away from home in a midweek clash so I’m happy with that,” he added.
