American classics set for Ormskirk MotorFest
EYE-CATCHING cars that hail from the USA are to join the fantastic displays at the biggest free motoring extravaganza in the North West.
The American Auto Club North West (AACNW) aims to bring a fleet of magnificent vehicles to the Ormskirk MotorFest, which takes place on Sunday, August 28.
Some say everything is bigger in America, and that is certainly true of the cars.
Three of the motors coming to Ormskirk with the AACNW are a Chevrolet Impala, which measures 17-ft long; a six-litre Plymouth ’Cuda, one of the top US muscle cars of the 1970s; and a Dodge Charger, which has a 5.7 litre “hemi” engine.
As well as looking impressive on static display, the cars will also be making plenty of noise when they join the other vehicles that will take part in the parade laps around the town centre. Vice-chairman of the AACNW, Gordon Dennett, said: “American cars are known for their ‘fins’n’chrome’ while a lot of models are known as ‘muscle cars’, and we aim to have plenty of fins, chrome and muscle on display.
“This will be the first time we have come to Ormskirk MotorFest and we are looking forward to it. People really enjoy seeing the American cars at festivals, especially the children.”
Ormskirk MotorFest is organised by Aintree Circuit Club and supported by West Lancashire Borough Council.
More than 300 classic and competition cars and motorcycles from all eras of motoring will be on display in Coronation Park and Ormskirk town centre for MotorFest.
Thousands of people are expected to visit Ormskirk to enjoy the motoring festival.
Some of the top vehicles of all types at MotorFest will be lined up in a special area in Coronation Park to take part in the Concours d’Elegance.
Judges will examine the vehicles and award prizes in 13 categories along with an overall winner. The Concours is sponsored by Halsall-based air conditioning firm, Carequick Ltd, for the second year.
As well as the fantastic cars, a Vintage and Handmade Fair will also be held with a great selection of stalls selling art and crafts, retro, vintage and up-cycled wares, as well as providing fabulous entertainment by the Cotton Town Hot Club, DJs and creative activities for families.
Trinity Girls Brass Band will be performing in Coronation Park bandstand between 2pm and 4pm, and the Merchant Taylors’ Sax Jazz Group will also be providing musical entertainment in the town centre and at the bandstand at Coronation Park.
Aintree Circuit Club chairman, Mike Ashcroft, said: “We are really pleased the AACNW are coming to Motorfest. The sheer size of some of the American vehicles means they look very impressive, and I am sure plenty of MotorFest visitors will take a look at them.”

West Lancs Borough Council Portfolio holder for Planning, Cllr John Hodson, said: “MotorFest isn’t far away now, and we are looking forward to it.
