Mavis, 88, the queen of video

-

WHEN 88-year-old Mavis Crewe was encouraged to video a rendition of her favourite song at a Lancashire care home little did she realise she would become a Facebook phenomenon.

Ending with a farewell wave and blowing an affectionate kiss to her daughter Amanda, the smiling face of Birch Green Care Home, Skelmersdale, brought tears to the eyes of many.

Uploaded on Facebook, it gripped communities far and wide attracting thousands of likes and dozens of plaudits.

At the last count, more than 10,000 people had liked it and dozens more had made comments praising Mavis’s heartwarming song.

Comments have included: “This is the most precious and beautiful video I’ve ever seen” to “Lovely to see something positive about care homes” and “Such a heartwarming video, thank you for sharing her happiness.”

Daughter Amanda, who lives in nearby Skelmersdale, praised the home’s lifestyle co-ordinator Gill Seddon who can be heard encouraging Mavis through the song to the end.

Amanda added: “My mum used to sing this song when I was younger and she comes alive every time she sings it.

“Praise must go to the staff at Birch Green. They are fantastic and the way they look after my mum gives me real peace of mind. “I am in awe of them.” Phillipa McGrath, general manager at Birch Green, said: “Mavis is a pleasure and it’s satisfying to see her making this video message for Amanda.

“We do whatever is relevant and helps our residents, and this has really struck a chord with everyone at the home and further afield. Simon Cowell could do worse than watch this!”
