AGROUP of Burscough Scouts helped reunite an elderly woman with a jewellery box given to her by her late husband after it was stolen in a burglary.

The 29th Burscough Scouts shared the story on their Facebook page, attracting praise from members of the community who applauded their kind gesture.

The Scouts were out on “Operation Moonlight” in Bickerstaffe last month, which involves hiding and retrieving members of their group.

During their activity the youngsters came across a discarded jewellery box and several items of jewellery in a secluded location near some railway arches.

The Scouts set about searching the undergrowth and gathered the items up which they later handed into police.

John, who was one of the parent helpers during Operation Moonlight was present when the Scouts discovered the items.

He said: “They found a couple of gold lockets with some photos in them.

“They also found a watch and a couple of gold rings.”

According to the Facebook post, the Scouts have now been informed that the items have been identified and returned to their rightful owner who it appears had been burgled a week earlier.

The post said the lady was “delighted” to have the jewellery box returned to her as the items were sentimentally precious, having been given to her by her husband who sadly passed away a couple of years ago.

John added: “They recovered something her son had made for her. She’s extremely grateful to the Scouts for what they have done.”

The Scouts’ good deed received praise from members of the community on social media.

Kelly Gidman said: “Well done kids! So pleased they got back to their rightful owner.”

Gavin Anthony said: “Well done 29th Scouts! This is why people look up to you and other young people want to be like you.

“You are a credit to your community and you are showing why your promise matters.”

Wendy Lewis-Cordwell said: “These precious items will hold many memories for this lady of her late husband and are irreplaceable.

“Well done Scouts for taking the time to search and doing the right thing.”
