It’s pay as you feel at centre’s ‘junk food’ cafe
SKELMERSDALE’S first ‘payas-you-feel’ cafe has opened its doors – and it’s all junk food, but not as we know it.
The cafe, situated in the Tanhouse Community Centre in Ennerdale, diverts food destined for waste and uses it to create delicious and tasty, home cooked meals where people can eat on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis in money, time or skills.
The project has already served up more than 200 meals to people in Skelmersdale and will continue to do so. And the team said feedback has been excellent, with people really enjoying the new experience. The project, initiated by The Birchwood Centre, is supported by community volunteers, West Lancashire College, Oaks Church in Tanhouse and Tanhouse Community Enterprise.
The food is generously donated by Tesco, in Burscough, Marks and Spencer, in Ormskirk and Lidl in Standish as part of their food waste reduction programme.
Stella Connell from the Birchwood Centre said: “We are really astounded by the success of the project, delighted to be working with our partners and amazed at the attendance to date. The support of local people, volunteers and West Lancashire College has helped us tremendously in making the Junk Food Cafe such a success.
“As a beneficial consequence of people coming together over home cooked, tasty food we are able to get to know our communities, find out what they can help us with and what we can help them with.
“Not only does it help the environment it is an amazing opportunity which could easily be lost.”
The Junk Food Cafe takes place each Wednesday from 12-2pm at the Tanhouse Community Centre.
