Shoppers brave the storm as Aldi opens

ALDI opened the doors to its new Burscough store last week with a special golden ticket event.

The first 100 people in the queue at the Ringtail Retail Park store at 8am on Thursday were handed a special envelope containing a prize, and excited shoppers braved the early stages of Storm Doris to queue for more than an hour in the wind and rain to gain one of the tickets.

One resident, Alan Blackburn, arrived at 5.15am to claim his place at the front of the queue. Prizes included a 49” 4k Smart TV, a Dyson Vacuum Cleaner, Garmin Sat Navs, Alidi vouchers and a range of goodie bags.

Aldi bosses had hired a DJ to compere the build-up to the opening, while staff gave away goodies including Aldi trolley tokens, and a sandwich van was hired to give free hot drinks to the shoppers.

Store manager Barry Wright opened the supermarket with representatives from Grove Community Centre who were given donation products to aid their weekly activities.

Mr Wright said: “There was a real buzz at the store opening this morning, and it was great to meet the hardworking representatives from Grove Community Centre.

“We hope our customers enjoy shopping at their new store.”

Until the arrival of the Burscough, Aldi customers had to travel two miles to the nearest Aldi food stores in Ormskirk and Meols Cop, which had both reached full capacity and were overtrading.

The store, which stands at 1,153sqm, has created 20 new jobs for the local community. Shoppers can expect to find around 1,500 product lines including fresh, locally sourced produce, as well as weekly ‘Special buys’.

The special buys are available every Thursday and Sunday, offering customers a range of products from fresh produce to electrical goods.

The Ringtail Retail park store will open 8am until 10pm from Monday to Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sundays. Aldi is the UK’s joint fifth largest supermarket with over 690 stores and over 29,000 employees.
