Rogers thrilled as Skem win at last

- BY EMMA SANDERS

SKELMERSDALE United recorded a crucial victory over Workington on Tuesday evening.

Alan Rogers’ side are at the bottom of the table and facing relegation unless they produce a miracle and conjure up several victories in the final stretch of the season.

It’s been a difficult year for the club but Rogers has been pleased with how his young players have adapted in recent weeks and they were finally rewarded for their efforts with a 1-0 victory.

Despite the narrow scoreline, Rogers was delighted with how his team performed and he described some of their football as ‘outstanding.’

“I’m delighted for the lads. Since I’ve come in, we should have won most of our games but it just hasn’t happened,” said Rogers.

“We were outstanding from the off and to be honest, we could have been three or four goals up after the first 20 minutes.

“They came back into it in the second half and had a good spell in the final period of the game but we were always comfortable and we never looked like losing.”

It is the club’s first victory since November 12 and Rogers hopes the players can continue to reproduce the same level of performance for their upcoming fixtures.

“I’ve told the lads to play without fear. We want to play football – I’ve not played against anyone in this league who wants to get the ball down and play proper football,” said Rogers.

“Teams like to hoof the ball up and play direct but I want us to play and the boys are buying into it and producing some great stuff.

“The lads got some fantastic comments from the opposition manager and fans on Tuesday and that’s a testament to their performance”.

On Saturday, Skelmersdale look to build on their win with a visit to Corby Town.
