FROM the Chelford Review, w/c March 6, 2017 CATTLE A good range of cattle forward and a very similar trade, cows & calves to £1,150 for Mr Greenwood and an unregister­ed Simmental bull to £1,030 for Les Pennington. The Heath family were in fine form taking top priced steer, heifer & young bull. Topping steers with an Angus x South Devon at £1,180, just ahead of their best blue x at £1,160. Graham Evans sold Hereford x to £1,145 and Dave Norbury had Limousin x at £1,140. There were some super young steers about too, 11-month-old Limousin x to £895 for Dave Poole – Bailey, and nine-month-old blue x to £870 for Jonathan and Ben Robinson. PIGS Nearly 100 fewer on offer and more buyers in attendance. That said, regular vendors reaped the benefits with gilts to 162p and boars 140p Porkers average £90.55, Cutters average £130.16, Baconers average £134.10, Overweight average £122.57. SHEEP A wonderful trade throughout, with all our buyers in fine form and rewarding our loyal, regular vendors with some excellent prices for their top quality lambs. ewes average £58.88 and rams average £89.94 – old season lambs – premium ave p/kg 218.5, prime ave p/kg 197.0, others ave p/kg 170.5. EGGS A similar demand for hen eggs. More duck eggs forward met an easier demand. Large barn 85p, medium barn 75p, duck £1 – £2.80, quail 75p. POTATOES Potatoes generally £3-£4 with all best over £5. Nadine £5.75, Harmony £5, Valor £4, Melody £4, Manitou £3.50. FRUIT & VEG All varieties of cabbage very short to 38.50 per dozen, other vegetables good value for money considerin­g the cold weather conditions. hard cabbage x 8 £8, Savoy cabbage x 12 £8.50, red onion x 10kg £5, white onions x 10kg £2.25, beetroot x 12.5kg £2, dirty carrots x 12.5kg £4, washed carrots x 12.5kg £3.50. PRODUCE Trade was very brisk and only a couple of loads failed to sell. Straw and best haylage particular­ly well sold. Five loads barley straw average £88 per tonne, four loads small bale hay 1st quality £140, 130 per tonne, 12 loads 1st quality haylage £98 and £96 per tonne.
