Carlton quite a rarity for those who like the orange stuff

- BY DAVID GRICE

AS the Tennis season is just around the corner, teams around the districts and neighbouring towns of Southport are franticly looking for new members. One club in Birkdale may have a look that will stand out from the crowd.

Carlton Lawn Tennis Club will be launching an open day for new members on Sunday March 26th from 1pm at their club on Dunkirk Road in Birkdale.

It has been a winter of transformation for the Birkdalebased Lawn Tennis Club. With the surface of shale or clay becoming tougher to find in this country, Carlton are one of the few in the North West region to still have the orange stuff.

But with the last few seasons seeing members potentially looking for a change in playing surface, a new supplier came in to keep the clubs roots firmly intact.

With the total cost coming to around £12,000 which included refurbished court lines and new netting on their main show court. This change has given hope to the club for bringing in new additions to their members list.

The last few seasons has seen a lot of success come their way, with many promotions being secured, including one from their third team in 2016. Carlton now has teams in the third, fourth and fifth divisions of the Southport league, as well as division seven.

They have also branched out into the Liverpool League. Both their men’s and women’s teams are still finding their level after starting from the bottom. The men’s team currently reside in Section E, and the women’s team in Section D of their respective leagues.

If you are not into the competitive side that much, then Carlton does have a team that just play friendlies against other similar sides from other league clubs.

Like many sports clubs, there are plenty of social nights to attend, and Carlton are renowned for their good value.

With the clay season approaching on the professional tour and the club billing this refurbishment as ‘Roland Garros coming to Birkdale’, now would be a good time to pick that racket up, giving it a go and maybe bringing a friend along.

The season begins on April 24th. So for more information on other teams, check out the league’s official website www. southporttenisleague.org.uk for further details.
