Manner of loss ‘unacceptable’

- BY EMMA SANDERS

SKELMERSDALE United’s season continues to be a struggle as they suffered yet another defeat on Tuesday evening.

Their 3-1 loss against Sutton Coldfield followed a bitter loss on Saturday too, as they were beaten 5-0 by Barwell.

Alan Rogers and his side have shown improvement in their performances but results are still not going their way and Skem are still sat at the bottom of the league table.

Player-Coach Steven Gillespie has seen the improvements in recent weeks but he was left feeling hugely ‘frustrated’ by yet another loss on Tuesday.

“It is deeply disappointing. We expected a reaction from Saturday and we didn’t get it,” said Gillespie.

“We started well and got ourselves in front but we conceded in less than a minute. The golden rule is ‘don’t concede the second goal.’ We got our noses in front and it’s deeply frustrating.

“The second-half just wasn’t acceptable. They players know it themselves but they’ve been told, that’s for sure.

“We couldn’t have started the game any better. We started after the re-start thinking ‘go on, get another’ but we conceded straight away.

“It’s amazing how much at the top level it happens and it could be that you just switch off but it was frustrating.

“You expect the bare minimum every time you put the shirt on. In that game we expected to get a result and they came away beating us 3-1 comfortably.”

Gillespie is already looking ahead to Skem’s next fixture against Blyth Spartans on Saturday but he admitted it’s unlikely he will be able to feature as he continues to nurse a Hamstring injury.

“It’s not great at the moment [his recovery.] I’d like it to be further on. I tried training on Monday and it wasn’t good.

“Hopefully I will be back for the Ashton game”.
