Ormskirk Advertiser

THE majority of engagements that Noel and I attended this week occurred over the weekend.

Mid-week we visited Chester to attend the Sheriff’s breakfast which is a charity event and an ancient custom of Chester.

Saturday evening Noel and I attended a superb evening of Nordic music, presented by Ormskirk Musical Society at Ormskirk School.

These events are always interesting as the music is chosen for the fact that it’s little known.

Following our relaxing evening of music, I had the fantastic opportunity to join the street pastors on their walk of Ormskirk.

I’ve wanted to find out more about the work of the street pastors for some time and joining with them on Saturday evening was a great way to find out what they do.

We walked around Ormskirk, scouring the streets for bottles and disposing of these so that they couldn’t be used as weapons.

We were also keeping an eye out for anyone who may have been overly drunk and in need of help.

Numerous pairs of flip flops were handed out to ladies who had been struggling in their heels and were now walking bare foot.

The street pastors also looked after one person who was unsteady on their feet.

What struck me most, was that in the main the people who required help, were not students.

There were people of differing ages who the pastors helped and it was re-assuring for me as a mother to a daughter whose 18th birthday it was, that there are people who give up their time to help others.

After a very late night out with the street pastors, I attended the 150th year celebrations at Christ Church Aughton.

We were treated to a very lively sermon from Archbishop Paul Bayes.

On Sunday afternoon, we launched the 2017 season for the Hesketh Bank Light Railway which is celebrating 50 years this year.

The railway is a lovely place to visit and to talk to enthusiasts.

It’s ideal for younger children as it doesn’t have the same hustle and bustle of bigger railways.

The track is short but the bonus is that you can ride on the trains as many times as you like.

If you’ve not been, why not check out their website for dates and times for the new season?
